
Owls Comeback Falls Short at Tulsa

TULSA – The Rice women's basketball team battled all the way back from a 19-point deficit but ultimately fell short on the road to Tulsa 70-65 Wednesday night. The Owls fall to 11-7 (5-2 AAC) on the season.
Emily Klaczek led the Owls with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Destiny Jackson also finished with 17 points with two rebounds and an assist. Dominique Ennis finished with 11 points, three assists, a block and a steal.
As a team, Rice shot 26-of-65 (40.0%) from the floor and 7-of-15 (46.7%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 6-of-8 (75.0%) showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Shelby Hayes scored the first points for Rice before a 12-0 run gave Tulsa a 14-2 lead. Down by 15 points, Hailey Adams' layup, followed by a Ennis three-pointer, cut the deficit to 18-8. Klaczek brought the Owls within eight, but another run made it 22-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Tulsa scored the opening points of the quarter to extend the lead, but Maya Bokunewicz drilled a three-pointer to bring Rice within 13. Down 28-13, back-to-back Klaczek and Kennedy Clifton scores, followed by a Klaczek three-pointer, brought the Owls within eight. Tulsa led 38-22 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Tulsa grabbed a 19-point lead to open the third, but Ennis and Jackson combined on the next six points to bring Rice within 13 points. Following a Tulsa score, Ennis drilled a three-pointer with Clifton later following with another three to cut the deficit to 45-34. Still trailing by 11, Jackson and Klaczek used a quick run to bring Rice within six, but Tulsa closed the quarter on a run, taking a 53-43 lead.
Fourth Quarter
After trading scores to open the fourth, Klaczek and Clifton connected on back-to-back layups, with Ennis later drilling another three-pointer, to bring Rice within three at 55-52 with 6:31 remaining. After the Golden Hurricane pushed the lead to seven, Jackson hit a layup and three to bring Rice within two. A few possessions later, Adams tied the game at 63-63 with 2:25 left. Tulsa took the lead back with 48 seconds remaining, but Jackson tied the game back up at 65-65 with 41 seconds to go. Tulsa would take the lead on free throws and close out the game with a 70-65 win.
