
Owls Fall at Home to Memphis

HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team dropped a 73-66 home game to Memphis Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls fall to 11-8 (5-3 AAC) on the season.
Destiny Jackson led the Owls with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Hailey Adams recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while adding three blocks and two steals.
As a team, Rice shot 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the floor and 3-of-13 (23.1%) from three-point range. Rice was 17-of-24 (70.8%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Trinity Gooden scored the game's first basket as the two sides traded scores early. Down by two, back-to-back Fatou Samb layups, followed by a Jackson basket, gave the Owls a 9-5 lead. After the Tigers cut the deficit to one, Jackson and Adams connected on the next two scores to extend the lead to five points. Rice led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
A 6-0 Memphis run gave the Tigers a five-point lead before Samb snapped the run with a pair of free throws. Trailing 25-19, Sussy Ngulefac's layup brought the Owls within four, but the Tigers were able to extend the lead back to seven. Emily Klaczek later hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four, but the Tigers were able to push their lead to nine points. Rice trailed 35-28 at the half.
Third Quarter
Memphis extended the lead to 13 points to open the third quarter before Jackson snapped the run with a layup. Another Memphis run made the lead 45-32, but Maya Bokunewicz answered with a three-pointer, with Adams and Klaczek adding baskets to cut the deficit to six. Memphis led 56-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Trailing by 17 points, Jackson's layup, followed by a Bokunewicz and-one conversion, made it a 12-point deficit. The Tigers were able to extend the lead to 15, but Adams rattled off two scores to bring Rice within 11. After trading scores, an Ennis three-pointer made it an eight-point game at 72-64 with 33 seconds left. Following a Rice steal, Adams sank two free throws to bring Rice within six, but the Owls wouldn't get any closer, falling 73-66.
