Season #74 at Rice Stadium
Rice opens its 74th season at Rice Stadium against Houston in the 42 Bayou Bucket on Saturday. Rice is 40-32-1 in home openers since Rice Stadium opened in 1950 when the defending Cotton Bowl champion Owls defeated defending Orange Bowl champion Santa Clara 27. Rice is 69-41-1 overall in home openers. Mike Bloomgren is 2-3 in home openers.

Saturday's game renews the meeting of the two FBS programs in closest proximity to each other. The two schools' stadiums stand approximately four miles apart or 7-8 miles of driving distance (depending on the route chosen).
Huddle Up Honors 2013 Champions
Rice will also recognize the members of the Owls' 2013 Conference USA championship squad as a featured part of the annual R Association Huddle Up. The 2013 Owls captured Rice's first outright conference football title by blasting favored Marshall 41-24 on December 7, 2013. Members of the team as former head coach David Bailiff will be the featured guests at a reception on Friday and then recognized on the field during the game on Saturday.
Putting on the Pressure
After a correction to the original stats, Rice was credited with three sacks against a Texas offensive line that returned all five starters and allowed only eight sacks last season. De'Braylon Carroll was credited for 1.5 sacks and his solo sack against Outland and Lombardi Award Watch list member LT Kelvin Banks, Jr. was only the second he's allowed in his career. Carroll also added a hurry to his first-game effort. Josh Pearcy was credited with a solo sack in addition to a hit and a hurry. Coleman Coco shared a sack with Carroll and added a hit in his FBS debut. Chike Anigbogu was credited with a hit by PFF while LB Chris Conti was credited with a hurry.
Debuts
Eight Owls made their FBS debuts in the opener while a tenth made his first FBS appearance as an Owl. Freshmen RB Daelen Alexander, CB Jamarion Clark and LB Ty Morris were joined by sophomore Jalen Hargrove, and transfers Wyatt Freeman (LS), Shepherd Bowling (S), Colin Giffen (FB) and Ethan Powell (TE) saw their first FBS action while Duke transfer Michael Larbie saw his first action as an Owl.

- This is the 45th meeting between Rice and Houston, the 42nd to decide possession of the Bayou Bucket and the third to be known as "The Bayou Bucket Classic presented by H-E-B.
- Rice is 11-33 in the series and is looking to break a seven-game losing streak in the series (2011-2021)… The seven-game streak is the longest in the series, but because of years in which the teams did not play, the current streak spans 12 years.
- The series began at Rice Stadium in 1971 and the first battle for the Bayou Bucket was also at Rice Stadium in 1974.
- The series began with pair of meetings at Rice Stadium in 1971 & 1972. From 1978 through 2003 the series alternated between home stadiums. Rice's home game in 2004 was moved to Reliant (now NRG) Stadium and the series returned there in 2012 &13. The 2021 game at TDECU Stadium was canceled due to COVID-19.
- Rice is 5-11 when meeting the Cougars in a non-conference game, 4-16 while members of the Southwest Conference and 2-6 as members of C-USA.
