HOUSTON — Year seven of the Scott Pera era began this afternoon as Rice held its first official basketball practice of the 2023-24 season.
Pera returns eight letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that earned a berth to the College Basketball Invitational. Rice welcomes back Second Team All-Conference USA member Max Fiedler, who led the country with a 73.5% field goal percentage. Two-time All-C-USA Honorable Mention member Travis Evee, who averaged 15.6 points per game, also returns.
"It's always exciting," said Pera. "I think there has to be a level of ramping it up from last spring, to summer, to fall to now this is Day One. I want the guys to be excited about this being a real practice and not just a workout. It has to be treated differently."
Rice begins the 2023-24 campaign on Nov. 2 when it hosts Clayton State in an exhibition game. The regular season begins on Nov. 7 when the Owls host crosstown foe St. Thomas.
