Rice was held to just 176 yards of offense as it fell to No. 11 Texas, 37-10, Saturday afternoon in both team's 2023 opener.
The Story
After forcing a turnover on downs to begin the game, Rice got on the board first when Tim Horn connected on his first career field goal, a 43-yarder that gave the Owls a 3-0 lead. However, on the next possession, UT drove 75-yards, scoring on a 37-yard pass to take the lead. After Texas added a field goal, Rice drove to the UT 46-yard line. But on third down, JT Daniels was intercepted. Another field goal made it a 10-point game. On the ensuing drive, Daniels was picked off again. But the Rice defense stepped up again, stopping the Longhorns on fourth-and-one. The Owls moved the ball to the 39 before having to punt, and Conor Hunt unleashed a 58-yarder that was downed to the three. But UT kicked its third field goal of the half as it took a 16-3 lead into halftime.
After Rice opened the second half with a three-and-out, UT drove 62 yards, capping it off with a nine-yard touchdown pass. Rice then went for it on fourth-and-one from their own 45, but Daelen Alexander was stopped for no gain. Texas immediately took advantage, scoring on a 44-yard pass on its first play from scrimmage. UT added another touchdown late in the third quarter. Rice finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter when the Owls drove 62 yards in 13 plays, finished off by Daniels finding Luke McCaffrey for a 15-yard touchdown.
