
Stadel to be Inducted to SWC Hall of Fame

WACO – Rice men's track and field and Southwest Conference all-time great, Ken Stadel, will be one of nine athletes inducted into the SWC Hall of Fame Class of 2023, the organization has announced.
A Rice graduate of 1974, Stadel is a three-time All-American and still holds school records in both discus (209-2) and shot put (60-11). He was one of four inductees in the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1989.
During Stadel's Rice career from 1970-74, he was a four-time SWC discus champion. His All-American honors also came from discus, finishing second at the NCAA meet in 1972, second in 1973 and fifth in 1974. In addition to his discus success, he also scored points in shot put at four SWC meets, including a third-place finish in the inaugural SWC Indoor Championship.
Stadel was awarded the Bob Quinn Award in 1974, which is awarded to the most outstanding Rice male athlete of the year. That same year he earned the Emmett Brunson Award, which is presented to the most outstanding male track and field senior at Rice.
In 1980, Stadel finished sixth in discus at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He earned a top-5 world ranking for three-straight years (1977-79) while also having a top-10 U.S. ranking for over a decade.
