HOUSTON — Seven games against 2022-23 postseason teams, including nine that won at least 19 games, highlight the 2023-24 Rice Men's Basketball non-conference schedule, head coach Scott Pera announced on Wednesday.
"We are pleased to announce our non-conference schedule. It is headlined by a visit from Harvard and trips to Texas and Houston as well as a plethora of other challenges against quality teams that are well-coached. We look forward to spending Thanksgiving in Las Vegas in the Vegas Classic where we have three tough opponents. The non-league finishes at home against a 26-win Louisiana team. We can't wait to see everyone on Nov. 7th for our home opener."
Rice will open the season at home for the second time in the last three years when it hosts St. Thomas on Nov. 7. It is the fourth time that Rice will open the season against the Celts and the first since 2013-14. The Owls will then host Harvard on Nov. 10, the first meeting between the two schools since 2014.
A four-game road trip begins on Nov. 15 in Austin when they take on former Southwest Conference foe Texas. Last year, the Owls took UT to overtime before falling, 87-81.
The Owls then head to Henderson, Nev., to take part in the Vegas Classic. They begin the tournament on Nov. 21 against fellow CBI participant Indiana State. The following day, they will face NIT participant New Mexico. Rice closes the tournament on Nov. 24 when it faces Big West regular season champion UC-Irvine.
Rice returns home for a pair of games, hosting UT-Martin on Nov. 30 before welcoming crosstown foe Houston Christian (Dec. 2). The Owls then head across town to face Houston for the first time in two years on Dec. 6.
After hosting Incarnate Word on Dec. 13, the Owls head to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State (Dec. 16).
Rice closes its non-conference slate with a pair of home games, first against Prairie View A&M on Dec. 20 before welcoming Sun Belt Conference champion Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 22.
