June 23-29 in Cary, North Carolina
Rice righthanded pitcher Parker Smith has been invited to join 55 other premier non-draft eligible college players at the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
Smith earned first-team, All-Conference USA honors this past season as the Owls' Friday night starter. He finished the regular season ranked second in C-USA with a 2.75 ERA and was tied for second in innings (85), fifth in strikeouts (80), strikeouts looking (26), and opponent's batting average (.231). He became the first Owl since 2019 to be named C-USA Pitcher of the Week for his 1-0 win at FAU on March 30. He worked a career-best 8.2 innings and struck out a career-high nine before Matthew Linskey came on to retire the final hitter and close out the first home conference shutout against FAU since 2017. Smith bettered his strikeout total two weeks later when he fanned 14 vs. Charlotte in a 1-0 loss. He made four starts in the regular season against ranked opponents (#2 Stanford on 2/24; #15 Texas Tech on 3/3, #19 DBU on 4/28 and #22 UTSA on 5/5) and had no decisions while posting a 2.45 ERA in those outings (6 ER in 22.0 IP). He was named to the 2023 Shriners College Classic All-Tournament team after he tossed six shutout innings against #15 Texas Tech.
Smith will be looking to join his head coach (Jose Cruz Jr.-1994) and associate head coach (Paul Janish-2003) in representing his country and become the first Owl to do so since Matt Canterino in 2019. Norm Charlton (1984) was the first Owl to be named to the national team and a total of 16 Owls have competed internationally as members of Team USA.
The 2023 training camp will open on June 23 with a pair of practices before the players are divided into two teams for a five-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series from June 25-29. After the conclusion of the series, USA Baseball will name a final, 26-man Collegiate National Team roster after Training Camp that will represent the United States in a friendship series against Chinese Taipei and Japan from June 30-July 12.
All five Training Camp games will be played at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The series begins on June 25 at 3 p.m. ET, with four games following over the next four days. Game two will be on June 26 at 6 p.m. ET, game three on June 27 at 7 p.m. ET, game four on June 28 at 6 p.m. ET, and the series will conclude with game five on June 29 at 11 a.m. ET.
