Rice to face FAU-WKU loser at 4 p.m. Thursday
Reckling Park: Dallas Baptist University jumped on Rice for three runs in the first and rolled to a 13-2 win in seven innings in the opening round of the 2023 Conference USA Baseball Championship on Wednesday.
The Details: After surrendering three runs in the first, Rice answered with a run in the top of the second. Guy Garibay Jr. led off with a walk, advanced to second on a bunt single by Ben Dukes, and then to third on a passed ball, coming home on a ground out by Drew Holderbach. They cut it to 3-2 in the top of the third when Connor Walsh slapped his 11th home run of the year over the wall in left. DBU exploded for seven runs in the third and fourth innings to build an insurmountable lead.
Notes
- Rice fell to 38-17 in C-USA tourney (8-1 in tournament games at Reckling), 10-5 in tournament openers, and 3-2 in openers as the lower seed.
- Ben Dukes had a double and two singles to record Rice's first three-hit game since Braden Comeaux was 3x4 on May 22, 2019 vs. Southern Miss. Dukes has hit in five of his last six (.444, 8x18) with the first three multi-hit games of his career and four doubles.
- Walsh finished the game 2x4. He is hitting .364 (12x33) over his last 10 games with three homers and 11 RBI
- Holderbach's RBI was his ninth in his last 10 games and his 30th of the season,
- Manny Garza threw out his 20th runner of the season (in 43 attempts)
- Ben Royo's fourth-inning single extended his on-base streak to 15 games, one shy of the season-best, 16-game streak by Jack Riedel.
Up Next: Rice will play the loser of Wednesday's final first-round game between Florida Atlantic and WKU at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
