HOUSTON — Charlotte's relievers held Rice to just one hit over 7.2 innings as the Owls fell, 4-1, Saturday afternoon from Reckling Park.
Both teams put two men on base in the first inning, but neither could bring a run across. In the bottom of the second, Aaron Smigelski was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second. Two batters later, Jack Riedel brought him in with a double off the left center field wall that knocked 49er starter Cameron Hansen out of the game. But, Andrew Spolyar came on and got Ben Royo and Pierce Gallo to end the inning.
Charlotte answered in the top of the third. Spencer led off by reaching on an error and Dante DeFranco walked. JD McCracken induced a double play, but Jake Cunningham homered to left center field to give the 49ers the lead.
After Charlotte added to its lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, Jack Dragum added its second home run of the day in the seventh.
