Barnett, Heap and Salmon to be saluted after doubles
In Brief: Rice will celebrate the careers of Wes Barnett, Dylan Heap, and Campbell Salmon while also remembering the legacy of one of it's greatest players when the 59th-ranked Owls host #52 SMU for the fourth Turpin Cup match. First serves are scheduled for 10 a.m.
Follow The Action: Live video and stats for all matches at GRBTC are available at RiceTennisLive23
Promotionally Speaking: The Owls will host a Tennis Brewfest with free samples for fans 21 and older. The first 60 fans will receive tickets for a free taco from the OhMyGogi food truck beginning at 11 a.m. A bounce house will be set up on the back courts and there will also be a Rayban giveaway for students.
Turpin Cup: Created in 2020, the Turpin Cup honors the memory of Jack Turpin. Turpin earned All-America honors and won a Southwest Conference doubles title in 1950 for Rice. His oldest son, Scott, followed his father to play tennis at Rice where he served as a co-captain as a senior while his younger two sons, Mark and Jeff, earned All-American honors playing for SMU.
The Owls: Rice jumped up 12 spots in the ITA computer rankings after last week's 4-3 win over #34 UTSA. Saturday's dual is the second of three final regular season matches at home prior to the Owls hosting the C-USA Championship April 21-23.
The Mustangs: SMU is 13-13 this season and ranked 52nd in this week's ITA rankings. They have won their last two matches, including a 4-3 win at #35 Memphis last Sunday. Their doubles team of Adam Neff and Pranav Kumar are ranked 66th in the nation and Neff is ranked 66th in singles.
The Series: This will be the last non-conference meeting between the schools as Rice will join the American Athletic Conference prior to next year's season, returning the schools to their more familiar setting as conference rivals. SMU has won the last three meetings overall and two of the three previous meetings at GRBTC.
GRBTC: Rice is 80-35 in dual action since moving into their current home in the fall of 2014. They are 10-7 in C-USA play and 7-12 all-time against ranked opponents.
NOTABLE:
• Rice is 15-5 in doubles this season and has a combined record of 33-15 so far this year. The Owls are 10-5 when winning the point, 2-3 when dropping the first point.
Up Next: The 2023 regular season concludes on Monday when the Owls host UAB at 2 p.m. The Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship will get underway on Friday, April 21 at GRBTC with two matches at noon.
