Fast Start Propels Owls Past Bears

Pair of ranked teams coming to GRBTC next weekend
Houston: Rice handed #57 Brown its first loss in doubles this year and the 53rd ranked Owls blocked any attempt by the Bears to change the momentum of the match, winning 4-1 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday. The match had originally been scheduled as part of a combined match with the Rice men's team, but rain showers and travel schedules forced the men's match to be played earlier in the day while the women's match was delayed until 3:30 in order to be played outdoors.
Doubles: Brown (11-5) came into the match a perfect 15-0 in doubles points this year, but the Owls were able to grab early breaks on all three courts. Maria Budin and Federica Trevisan went on to give Rice the early advantage with a 6-2 win at the second line while Diae El Jardi and Allison Zipoli provided the clinching point moment later.
Singles: The Bears responded to the challenge of coming out of doubles down 1-0 and were in position to possibly take five of six first sets in singles before Trevisan and El Jardi won their opening sets in tiebreakers. Zipoli maintained her strong play through both sets to finish first with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the first line. Brown answered with a win at six, but any hopes the Bears had of ramping up the pressure were lessened when Budin and Darya Schwartzman forced their matches to third sets and hold off any additional points for Brown while El Jardi and Trevisan moved swiftly through their second sets to clinch the win.
Up Next: Winners of back-to-back matches against ranked teams, the Owls will face another pair of teams in the ITA computer rankings next weekend when they host #60 South Florida on Friday and #31 FIU on Sunday.
