3/16/2023 7:56:00 PM | Men's Track & Field
HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team opened the 2023 outdoor season with several event titles at the Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invite at the University of Houston.
Rice ended with six event titles, with Elian Ahmar claiming the shot put title and Corbett Fong grabbing first in javelin. Alexander Slinkman followed an incredible indoor season by taking the pole vault title while Ese Amata (high jump) and Shaun Kerry (hammer throw) also took their event titles. Sam Welsh took first in discus while also breaking both the stadium and meet records for the event.
The Owls had 22 top-10 finishers with 17 placing in the top five.
Post Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jon Warren:
"Today was a wonderful way to start the season. The throws went great with victories in all four throws: Sam Welsh in the discus, Elian Ahmar in the shot, Corbett Fong in javelin and Shaun Kerry in the hammer. And in addition to these victories a bunch probably hit NCAA first round qualifying makes - Discus has Welsh, Sam Woodley and Nick Hicks, and the hammer had Kerru and Hicks with Cal Abdulky just a hair off. The vertical jump guys also had great days. Alexander Slinkman won the day and Matt Kumar took second in the pole vault and Ese Amata won the high jump. The weather was a rough variable today. Rain on and off and wind was just on. We are looking forward to hosting the Victor Lopez Classic next week!"
