"Our players cannot wait to get to Dallas and experience all the First Responder Bowl has to offer," Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren said. "After the Lending Tree Bowl last December, they came to work every day over the last year with the mindset to not only return to a bowl, but to come home as champions. That determination drove them to close the season with wins in our last two games to earn this opportunity and I know will continue as we prepare for Texas State."
The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl will be the Owls' 14th appearance in a bowl game and their second consecutive under Bloomgren. This marks just the third time in school history Rice has been bowling in consecutive years. The Owls played in the Sugar and Bluebonnet Bowls after the 1960 & 1961 seasons and then played in the Armed Forces, Liberty and Hawai'i Bowls from 2012-14. Rice has a 7-6 record in bowl games in its history which began in 1938 when the Owls defeated Colorado 28-13 in the second annual Cotton Bowl. It will mark the seventh appearance in a post-season game for the Owls since 2006 and the Owls are 3-3 in games over that stretch.
Texas State was 7-5 this year, including 4-4 in the Sun Belt Conference. This will be the fifth meeting between the schools and the first since 1987. The teams split the first four meetings, which were all held at Rice Stadium.
