
Owls Fall on Road to TCU

FORT WORTH – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to TCU 67-42 Sunday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena. The Owls fall to 2-1 on the season while the Horned Frogs move to 3-0 to open the season.
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 11 points while adding three rebounds and an assist. Destiny Jackson finished with six points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Jazzy Owens-Barnett had six points, two rebounds and a steal.
As a team, Rice shot 16-of-63 (25.4%) from the floor and 2-of-14 (14.3%) from three-point range. The Owls added an 8-of-14 (57.1%) shooting display from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Jackson recorded the game's first points, with TCU responding with a quick 4-0 run before Jackson tied the game back up. After back-to-back threes put the Horned Frogs up 10-4, Fatou Samb cut into the deficit with a jumper, with Owens-Barnett following with a three-pointer to bring Rice within one at 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Following a TCU three, Samb converted an and-one opportunity to bring Rice back within one. Down six, Hailey Adams hit a jumper at the top of the key to cut into the deficit, but the Horned Frogs responded with a 12-0 run to take a 30-14 lead. Ennis stopped the run and later scored in the closing seconds as the Owls trailed 35-18 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Fisher netted back-to-back baskets out of the break, followed by Owens-Barnett's layup to give the Owls a 6-0 run to open the half, cutting the deficit to 35-24. After a TCU free throw, Trinity Gooden's jumper brought Rice within 10, making it an 8-1 Rice run to open the third. Trailing 39-28, TCU closed the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 47-29 lead.
Fourth Quarter
Following a 5-1 Horned Frogs run to open the fourth, Ennis hit a layup, with Gooden later drilling a three-pointer as the Owls trailed 56-35. Ennis netted the last basket for the Owls with 45 seconds remaining, as TCU went on to win 67-42.
