Series Notes
•This is the 11th meeting between the two schools, the last 10 as a conference game.
• The schools met for eight consecutive years (1 non-conference and seven in C-USA)
before the 2020 game was canceled due to COVID-19-related issues.
• UTSA leads the series 7-3 (7-2 in conference) and has won seven straight. The Roadrunners have won four straight at home after Rice won the first meeting in San Antonio, 27-20, in 2013.
• The two first met on 10/13/12 in a non-conference game that was part of Rice's Centennial Celebration, with Rice winning 34-14.
• Rice's 27-20 at the Alamodome in 2013 was the first between the schools as conference rivals and Rice clinched the win by recovering an onside kick with 1:24 left after UTSA closed the gap to seven. Later that season, UTSA's 21-13 win at North Texas broke a tie between Rice and UNT and allowed Rice to capture the C-USA West and advance to the C-USA Championship game.
Down the Stretch Against Familiar Foes
Rice returns to the road this week to face UTSA, opening a final three-game stretch of games against opponents who joined the Owls in making the move to the American Athletic Conference this year. Rice opened its first AAC campaign by playing five schools who were returning members of the conference (USF, East Carolina, Tulsa, Tulane and SMU) and will close with games at UTSA and Charlotte on November 18, and wrap up with Florida Atlantic for Senior Day on November 25.
Championship Lineup
This will be Rice's second game in the last three against a 2022 conference champion, having played 2022 AAC champion Tulane on October 28 and facing two-time C-USA champs UTSA this weekend.
Long Distance Dean
Dean Connors and Ismail Mahdi of Texas State are the only FBS running backs with at least two carries of 50+ yards and a reception of at least 80 yards.
Peyton's Place
Peyton Stevenson is one of 13 players to have blocked two kicks this season, and one of four (Devin Grant of Buffalo; Jer'Zhan Newton, Illinois; DeDVonne Harris,Wyoming) to block of both a punt and a place kick. Stevenson blocked a PAT vs. UConn and then set up Rice's first touchdown vs. SMU with a blocked punt. It was the first time the Owls have returned a block punt for a touchdown since 2012 when Sam McGuffie blocked a Tulsa punt, then recovered it and returned it for a score. Stevenson is the first Owl to have multiple blocked kicks in a season since Christian Covington in 2013.

- His 80-yard TD reception at USF was the longest scoring play for Rice in nine years (Driphus Jackson to Jordan Taylor for 88 yards in 2014) and was also the longest pass reception by an Owls' running back since Quinton Smith and Chase Clement combined on an 80-yard catch and run vs. Houston in 2006.
- His 57-yard burst against SMU was the longest rushing play the Mustangs have allowed this season.
- He is the first Rice running back with at least three plays of better than 50 yards from scrimmage since Austin Walter had four (51 & 70 rushes/two 70 receptions) in 2017.
