
Klaczek Ignites Owls to Exhibition Win over Angelo State

HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team took control early en route to a 101-47 win Wednesday night against Angelo State at Tudor Fieldhouse in Rice's lone exhibition of the season.
The Owls were led by transfer Emily Klaczek's 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a 6-of-8 showing from three-point range. Transfer Sussy Ngulefac netted 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. Sophomore Jazzy Owens-Barnett added nine points, four rebounds and an assist, while senior Destiny Jackson had eight points and a game-high five assists. Junior Malia Fisher recorded seven points and a game-high six steals while senior Fatou Samb ended with six points and a game-high eight rebounds. 12 Owls recorded points in the game.
As a team, Rice shot 36-of-67 (54%) and 10-of-20 (50%) from three-point range. Rice also forced 27 Rambelle turnovers, scoring 34 points off those turnovers. The Owls also recorded 23 assists, 18 steals and five blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After Angelo State opened the scoring with a layup, Klaczek netted Rice's first points with a layup. With Rice leading 10-6, Shelby Hayes extended the lead with a second-chance layup before Klaczek drilled a three to put Rice up nine. Angelo State ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 15-13.
Second Quarter
Hailey Adams' jumper to open the second quarter kickstarted a 9-0 Owls run, finished off by Ngulefac's layup to give Rice a 24-13 lead. After Ngulefac's fourth basket of the second quarter, Klaczek hit another three to give the Owls a 39-22 lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
Klaczek and Trinity Gooden combined for an 8-0 run to open the third, with back-to-back threes from Gooden, followed by Klaczek, to take a 47-22 lead. Jackson followed with a steal and a layup to extend the lead. Kennedy Clifton's free throws ignited a 15-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back Klaczek threes, to put Rice up 67-26. The Owls offense continued to catch fire, with Ngulefac, Owens-Barnett and Clifton giving Rice a 77-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Owls shot a blistering 80% (12-of-15) from the floor and 83% (5-of-6) from three in the quarter, amassing 38 points in the third quarter alone.
Fourth Quarter
Malia Fisher hit another Rice triple to open the fourth, with Fisher and Jackson adding more baskets to give Rice an 84-36 advantage. Hayes started another Rice run with a layup, followed by a layup from Fisher and three-pointer from Adams, as the Owls extended their lead to 51 points. Layla Conley netted her first basket in the closing minutes, while Samb's layup eclipsed the triple-digit mark for Rice, as the Owls won 101-47.

The Owls will open the 2023-24 season next Monday against Houston Christian at Tudor Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
