Storm back from 20-point deficit
Details-Tulane jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the game's first six minutes and became the first team since Texas in the opener to outscore Rice in the first quarter. Rice answered by driving 82 yards in seven plays to cut the lead to 10-7 on a five-yard run by Juma Otoviano. Tulane scored 17 straight points in the second quarter to take a 27-7 lead into the locker room, but Rice served notice that the outcome was not necessarily a certainty by scoring on three of four second-half possessions. Otoviano's three-yard run capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive to open the second half. Gabriel Taylor stepped in front of a Michael Pratt pass on the Green Wave's next possession and raced up the sideline for 72 yards to set Rice at the Tulane three. Boden Groen made a diving catch of a pass from JT Daniels two plays later to draw Rice to within six at 27-21. After the teams traded punts for the only time in the game, Tulane extended the lead to 30-21, but Daniels answered with a 35-yard scoring strike to Luke McCaffrey to pull Rice to within two at 30-28. Any hopes for an Owl victory ended when Tulane exhausted the final 8:10 while marching from its 32 to the Rice four.
Next Up-Rice will welcome SMU back to Rice Stadium for the first time since 2012 as the Owls celebrate their 103rd homecoming with a 6:30 kickoff next Saturday at Rice Stadium.
