Homecoming Weekend game to be broadcast on ESPN U
Rice and SMU will kick off the 91st meeting between the schools in football at 6:30 p.m. (central) on Saturday, October 28 with coverage on ESPN U. The AAC and ESPN jointly announced the time of the game and broadcast partner assignment on Monday.
The game will be the centerpiece of Rice's 2023 Homecoming weekend and will be the first meeting between the long-time foes since Rice defeated SMU 36-14 on November 17, 2012, as Chris Boswell tied an NCAA record by kicking three field goals from at least 50 yards. The win improved the Owls record to 5-6, setting up a bowl-clinching win the following week at UTEP.
The series between the Owls and Mustangs is the second-longest for Rice, trailing only the 97 games between Rice and Texas. The series began on 11/17/1916 when Rice defeated SMU 146-3 in Houston. SMU leads the overall series 48-41-1 while Rice holds a 25-21-1 record in games played in Houston.
