Host #4 Texas A&M on Saturday
Houston: After seeing one match canceled by rain on Saturday, Rice returned to action on Sunday by blanking Louisiana 7-0 on Sunday morning at Advantage Indoor.
Doubles: Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi gave Rice the early advantage with a quick 6-2 win at the first line and Marte Lambrecht and Allison Zipoli secured the point with a 6-2 win at the third line.
Singles: The singles portion of the match opened with play on the five available courts and Budin, Sydney Berlin and Zipoli quickly grabbed first-set victories. El Jardi trailed 5-4 in her first set before winning the last three games while Lambrecht took her first set with a 7-1 win in a tiebreaker. The five combined to drop only 11 games in their second sets to give the Owls a 6-0 lead and Saara Orav closed out the match with a straight-set win at the sixth position, taking the court after Budin's win.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "I said to the team before the match it was nice to get back on the competition court. It feels like we were waiting a long time to play after the wait yesterday. We knew pretty early that we'd be indoors today and I thought the team did a really nice job after the long delay yesterday and playing today at a new facility. Even though we've never played here (before today), we didn't lose our stride. I thought (Louisiana) came out pretty aggressively in doubles and we stayed in it and got that doubles point. We played some solid singles across the board on every court. There are things we can definitely improve on, but this was another good step in the right direction."
Up Next: The Owls will join with the Rice men's team to host a combined dual next Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women hosting #4 Texas A&M while the men face LSU.
