Two matches in San Diego up next
In Brief: Third-ranked Texas A&M withstood an early challenge by Rice in doubles and then swept to a 7-0 win over the Owls at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Doubles: Rice jumped to a 1-0 lead in the last meeting between the teams last season in College Station with a pair of close wins in doubles and looked in position to repeat this year, taking a 4-2 lead at the second line and battling to a draw at the first position. A&M grabbed the early momentum with a win at the third line and then clinched the point by winning the last four games at the second position to take the point.
Singles: The Aggies swept to wins in five of six first sets in singles and held that momentum into the second set to clinch the victory with a win at the third line. Maria Budin and Marte Lambrecht extended their matches to three sets before A&M closed out the match.
Elizabeth Schmidt "They (A&M) are No. 3 in the country for a reason. They are battle-tested and came here after qualifying for indoor nationals. I thought we played well in spots, but they played really well consistently from start to finish. You have to take whatever opportunities they give you because if you let up a little bit, they're going to capitalize. We fought hard today and I saw a lot of growth. Playing matches at the level this one was will definitely help us tremendously, especially going on the road next weekend to California. Even though we didn't win, we got better today and that's what we're looking to do each time we step on the court."
Up Next: Rice travels to San Diego next weekend for matches against UCLA on Friday and San Diego State on Saturday.
