Owls Tripped Up On Road Against Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Rice women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Charlotte 66-61 Thursday night at Halton Arena. The loss snaps the Owls' three-game winning streak and drops Rice's record to 13-5 (4-5 C-USA).
Destiny Jackson led the way for Rice with 18 points while adding eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Malia Fisher and India Bellamy added 11 points each, with Fisher also grabbing eight rebounds. Ashlee Austin rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Owls with 10 points and nine rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Jackson opened the game with a three before the two sides traded baskets early. Austin connected for a three to give the Owls an early 8-5 lead before a quick run put Charlotte up 13-10. Austin and Jazzy Owens-Barnett gave the lead back to Rice, but the 49ers tied the game at 15-15 at the end of the opening frame.
Second Quarter
After trading baskets to open the second, a 5-0 run by the 49ers put Charlotte up 22-17 with four minutes until halftime. Fisher cut into the deficit with Ennis drilling a three to tie the game at 22-22. Charlotte took the lead with two minutes left, but Bellamy and Fisher sparked a 7-2 run to close the half with Rice up 29-26 at the break.
Third Quarter
Charlotte opened the third on a 13-1 run to take a 39-30 lead. Bellamy and Fisher kickstarted an 8-0 run to bring Rice within one. After trading baskets in the final minute, a last second shot gave the 49ers a 42-39 lead headed into the last quarter.
Fourth Quarter
After back-to-back Charlotte baskets to open the fourth, Jackson converted a three-point play to cut the deficit down to four. The 49ers continued to make baskets, pushing the lead back to eight with six minutes left. The Owls were able to battle back to get within one at 52-53, but Charlotte held off Rice in the closing minutes to secure the win.

Rice will head to Birmingham to face UAB on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
