Mekhi Mason Named C-USA Freshman of the Week

HOUSTON — After leading Rice to a road sweep, men's basketball guard Mekhi Mason was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
It is his second honor of the year, becoming the first Owl to win the award twice in a season since Marcus Evans in 2015-16.
Mason helped Rice to a road sweep at WKU and UTEP, averaging 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals while connecting on 45.5% (10-of-22) from the field, 40.0% (4-of-10) from three and 83.3% from the free throw line.
He opened the week scoring 10 points and recording a game-high five assists in an 81-78 victory over WKU, handing the Hilltoppers their first home loss of the season. He then led all players with 19 points and a career-high four steals in a 72-67, overtime win at UTEP.
His performance helped the Owls to their first road conference sweep since Feb. 6-8, 2020, and their best start to a season since 2003-04.
Rice begins its home conference schedule this Thursday, Jan. 5, when it hosts Louisiana Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will streamed by ESPN+.
