Next up: UCSB 9 a.m. Monday
In Brief: For the second time in as many days, Rice found itself in a marathon match, but host FAU outlasted the visiting version of Owls to take a 4-3 decision at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Details: Rice (1-1) opened strongly by taking the doubles point, but FAU (1-1) took four of six first sets in singles to set the stage for a nearly four-hour battle.
Doubles: Dylan Heap and Santiago Navarro snapped a 3-3 tie and won the last three games to post a 6-3 win over FAU's Nicolas Acevedo and Filip Krolo, who ended the fall season ranked 32nd. Kabeer Kapasi and Yasha Zemel followed with a 6-4 win to clinch the point while Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear were leading 5-3 when the point was assured.
Singles: FAU shook off the doubles point loss to win four of six first sets in singles, but Rice answered with second-set rallies to force two of those matches to third sets. After FAU took a 2-1 lead with straight set wins at the first two courts, Grear closed out a straight set win of his own to knot the match at 2-2. Emir Sendogan shook off a 6-2 loss in his first set to win consecutive 6-3 sets and put Rice back up 3-2, but FAU did not falter in securing the final two points and take the match.
Up Next Rice (1-1) and will meet UCSB (2-0) at 9 a.m. Monday to wrap up the opening weekend. The Gauchos have defeated both FAU (4-2) and USF (4-0) this weekend.
