Rice Drops Road Contest To Middle Tennessee

Murfreesboro, Tenn. – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to Middle Tennessee 85-56, Wednesday night at the Murphy Center. Malia Fisher led the Owls with 11 points while adding seven rebounds and two steals.
Destiny Jackson and Haylee Swayze finished with eight points while Ashlee Austin had seven points and three rebounds. India Bellamy ended with six points as 11 different Owls ended up with points in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Austin and Fisher got Rice started on offense, followed by a three-point play from Jackson to put the Owls up 7-4 midway through the first. Trinity Gooden's free throws put the Owls up 9-3, but the Blue Raiders closed the quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 16-13 lead.
Second Quarter
After trading baskets to open the second quarter, a 7-0 MTSU run put the Blue Raiders up 29-19 with two minutes left in the half. Shelby Hayes and Katelyn Crosthwait were able to cut into the lead, with Dominique Ennis eventually bringing Rice within four. MTSU added two more free throws to end the half, holding a 32-26 lead.
Third Quarter
Following a MTSU basket, Fisher hit the first three of the game for either side, bringing the Owls within five at 34-29. MTSU responded with an 11-0 run before Austin stopped the streak with a layup. Swayze knocked down a three to cut into the deficit, but another scoring run padded the Blue Raider lead. MTSU finished the third up 60-45.
Fourth Quarter
Rice wasn't able to gain any ground on Middle Tennessee for most of the fourth, with the Blue Raiders answering each Owl basket to keep their lead intact.

Rice will be back on the road Saturday, when the team travels to El Paso to face UTEP at 1 p.m.
