HOUSTON — Year six of the Scott Pera era began this afternoon as Rice held its first official basketball practice of the 2022-23 season.
Pera returns nine letterwinners from last year's team that earned a berth to the College Basketball Invitational. Rice welcomes back All-Conference USA Honorable Mention member Travis Evee, who connected on 86 three-pointers, good for fourth in C-USA. 2021 Third Team member Quincy Olivari, as well as Max Fiedler, who led the team in rebounds and assists, also return.
"I've got a great group of guys," said Pera. "We're in Year Six and we've built this how we want it to be. We have a great mix of older guys and a great mix of young talent. Quincy (Olivari), Max (Fiedler) and Travis (Evee) are three veterans that have played a lot of basketball for us and are very good players. The freshmen class is really, really good, long, and athletic and two transfers who can really contribute. We've got a balance of guys. We're older in some ways, we're youthful in others. We're older and more athletic than we've been. But at the end of the day, we've got to put it all together when it matters."
Rice begins the 2022-23 campaign on Oct. 31 when it hosts Rockhurst in an exhibition game. The regular season begins on Nov. 7 when the Owls travel to Malibu, Calif., to face Pepperdine. Rice opens its home schedule on Nov. 10 against St. Thomas.
