Ruston, La. — The Rice Soccer team won its third straight match to open conference play with a 4-1 victory at Louisiana Tech, Sunday afternoon from Robert Mack Caruthers Field.
The Details
The teams began the game feeling each other out. The Owls then began to put some pressure on, getting shots from Madison Kent, Delaney Schultz and Madi Allen in a five-minute span. Mikala Furuto got the game's first shot on goal in the 17th minute, but La Tech keeper Sydnee Korchak made the save. Rice broke the tie in the 28th minute when Grace Collins dribbled down the left side, worked her way toward the net and chipped the ball into the top right corner. Just two minutes later, Collins had another great chance in front of the net, but the ball was blocked as a Tech defender slid across to stop it. But in the 31st minute, Delaney Schultz took a corner kick, corralled the ball and put it into the bottom right corner, doubling Rice's lead to 2-0 at the break.
The second half began with Bella Killgore making a sliding save on Flavie Dube just five minutes in. However, on the ensuing corner kick, Emma Jones knocked it into the top right corner, cutting Rice's lead to 2-1. But the Owls came right back. In the 69th minute, Madison Kent's shot in the box was touched by a handball, giving Rice a penalty kick. Bella Killgore then put the PK into the left side of the net to put it back up by two goals. Six minutes later, Schultz fed Collins, who beat her defender in front and put it into the right side of the net for her second goal of the match. The Owls then clamped down on defense, keeping La Tech off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"It was another good three points, especially on the road. Louisiana Tech is a hard team to play and a difficult place to play. I thought we were much improved in our attack and in creating really good chances."
