HOUSTON — Rice held its second scrimmage of training camp on Saturday at Rice Stadium, with the offense striking for five touchdowns.
Just before the start, lightning forced the Owls into the bubble. After a Christian VanSickle 23-yard field goal, Wiley Green hit Luke McCaffrey down the left sideline for a 59-yard touchdown. Tim Horn (37 yards) and Christian VanSickle (19 yards) connected on field goals. Green then found Bradley Rozner in the end zone for 12 yards before the squad headed back into Rice Stadium. Juma Otoviano found the end zone after rushing for 26 yards. After another Tim Horn (42 yards) field goal, TJ McMahon got on the board when he connected with McCaffrey for three yards. VanSickle hit his third field goal of the night (28 yards) before Dean Connors closed the scoring with a nine-yard run.
"It was great to get out here on the game field. We had a little delay and had to start inside," said Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren. We got some great work in there, but I'm so glad we got to come out here. There's always something different about being on the game field. It puts a little stress on them and luckily, we saw it mostly in our younger players. The more work we can get on this game field, the better off we're going to be."
"I thought getting those 100-plus plays in today, including some situational work, was exactly what we needed to get out of it. So I'm pleased as we come down in camp."
Practice continues next week, which also includes the start of the academic school year as Rice continues to prepare for its season opener at USC on September 3.
