
Abikhaled, Fong, Landa Named to C-USA All-Academic Team

DALLAS - The Rice Owls men's track and field team placed a league-leading three student-athletes on the 2022 Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Wednesday (5/18). Andrew Abikhaled, Corbett Fong, and Hociel Landa comprised three of the 11 members on the team, which requires a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and at least a sophomore class standing.
Abikhaled, a junior from Austin, Texas, holds a 3.91 GPA in the graduate program while earning a Masters of Bioscience and Health Policy. He earned his fourth career C-USA All-Academic Team honor and second straight in track and field. The distance runner, who also earned a spot on the C-USA All-Academic Team in cross country in the fall, has been named to the C-USA Academic Honor Roll five times and has been named to the Rice President's Honor Roll three times. A Rice Scholar Athlete and two-time Rice Honor Athlete, Abikhaled is a two-time qualifier for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Most recently, Abikhaled placed sixth in the steeplechase at the C-USA Outdoor Championships and was eighth in the 5000m at the C-USA Indoor Championships. He set a personal best mark of 8:51.71 while winning the steeplechase at the Victor Lopez Classic.
Fong, a decathlete from Tomball, Texas, boasts a 3.95 GPA while majoring in Mechanical Engineering and earned his second straight C-USA All-Academic Team selection. Fong, who was a Rice Scholar Athlete of the Year, is a four-time C-USA Academic medalist and has been named to the C-USA Academic Honor Roll four times, as well as the Rice President's Honor Roll on four occasions. A three-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar qualifier, Fong earned points for the Owls with a fourth place finish in the javelin at this past weekend's C-USA Outdoor Championships, establishing a personal best mark of 61.45m. He also finished fourth in the heptathlon with a personal best 4974 points at the C-USA Indoor Championships back in February.
Landa, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., earned his sixth career C-USA All-Academic team selection and his first in track and field after winning five straight awards in cross country. Landa holds a 3.66 GPA in graduate school while earning a Masters of Mechanical Engineering. He is a five-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll awardee and a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award athlete. He recently earned the Rice University Hubert E. Bray Award for the best all-around male athlete and is a two-time Rice Honor Athlete. Landa competed in the mile, 3000m, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m throughout the two seasons.
