Hicks Defends Hammer Throw Title at C-USA Championships

Owls notch four all-conference performances on day two
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Rice Owls men's track and field team made the most of their opportunities on day two of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, recording one individual title and producing four all-conference performances at the Park West Athletics Complex.
Junior thrower Nick Hicks posted a season-best mark of 63.87m (209-06) to defend his hammer throw title, securing his fourth career conference championship between his outdoor/indoor careers. Hick threw 60+ meters on three of his six attempts with his best coming on his fifth attempt. Freshman teammate Cal Abdulky joined Hicks on the medal stand with a third place result, earning all-conference accolades for the first time in his career with a season-best throw of 56.28m (184-07).
The Owls earned an additional 18 team points in the decathlon with freshmen Grant Levesque (7261 points) and Augustus Henry (6918 points) finishing second and third, respectively. Levesque's point total was a season-best as he finished with five top-three finishes and two victories. Henry also won two events and posted four top-three finishes. In addition, junior Keegan O'Connor placed fifth in the event with a personal best 6302 points, highlighted by a victory in the 1500m (4:51.10) to conclude the decathlon.
Sophomore Travis Dowd gained an additional point for the Owls with an eighth place finish in the 10,000m to wrap up the evening, crossing the finish line in 31:35.68.
The Owls are back at it tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. with the discus.
