Zaskoda fans career-high six in first start of the year
The Details: The Ragin' Cajuns struck for a pair of runs in the first off Garret Zaskoda, who was making his first start since 4/16/21, but the sophomore from Sealy settled in and held Louisiana in check over the next three innings. He scattered six hits while striking out a career-high six in four innings, his longest outing since he worked 5.1 innings in a start at Texas A&M on 3/23/21. Jack Riedel's two-out single in the bottom of the first cut the margin to 2-1 and two innings later, the Owls surged in front. Austin Bulman led off with the first of his two doubles on the night and Nathan Becker followed with a double of his own to drive in Bulman and tie the game. One out later, Becker came home on an infield single by Manny Garza to put Rice up 3-2. Rice came into the game 11-1 when leading after six innings, but the Ragin' Cajuns beat the odds by scoring twice in the seventh and adding three in the eighth.
Notable
- The win was Louisiana's sixth straight in the series with Rice, narrowing the Owls' lead in the all-time series to 17-14
- The Cajuns finished the night with three triples, the most against the Owls since Sam Houston collected three on 3/4/2008 in a 13-12 win in Huntsville.
- Zaskoda's six strikeouts were part of a 10 strikeout night for the Owls, their third double-digit strikeout game in the last four.
- Bulman's two doubles were a career-high and allowed him to take over the team lead with 14 while his three hits allowed him to tie Guy Garibay for the team lead.
- Garza was 2x3 with an RBI and has hit in seven of 10 starts (15x32) since returning to action after missing 30 games with an injury.
