Amata Wins High Jump at Texas A&M

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice sophomore Ese Amata won his third high jump competition of the outdoor season with a victory Friday on day one of the Texas A&M 44 Farms Team Invitational.
Amata, from Endicott, N.Y., established a season-best mark by clearing 2.07m (6-9.50) on his very first attempt, that coming after jumping 1.97m and 2.02m. The victory was his eighth combined win between his outdoor and indoor careers.
The Owls had three competitors in the decathlon, with freshman Augustus Henry leading the way after five events going into day two. The Cottonwood Shores, Texas native racked up 3783 points across five events on Friday and sits in fourth place overall after third place results in each of the 100m (10.93), long jump (7.22m), and high jump (1.90m). Corbett Fong (3517 points) and Keegan O'Connor (3251 points) will enter Saturday in fifth and eighth place, respectively.
Rice also had five throwers in the discus, led by a third place results from Samuel Woodley after his toss of 52.65m on his fourth attempt.
The Owls will be back in action tomorrow, starting with the decathlon which picks back up at 10:15 a.m.
