Blue Surges Past Gray in 2022 Spring Game

Annual game closes out spring drills
TJ McMahon threw for 92 yards and a touchdown and added a second touchdown on the ground to lead the Blue (offense) to a 30-12 win over the Gray (defense) as Rice closed out its 2022 spring drills on Saturday afternoon at Rice Stadium.
McMahon was 7-14 on the afternoon and linked up with Bennett Mecom on an 11-yard score for the first touchdown of the day and he scored the final touchdown of the day with a 55-yard scramble down the east sideline.
Wiley Green completed 8-of-14 passes for 94 yards on the afternoon and hooked up with former quarterback Luke McCaffrey on a 14-yard scoring play that saw McCaffrey avoid a pair of defenders with a spinning move at the goal line.
Christian Van Syckle opened and close the scoring with field goals and Tim Horn added a third to account for the Blue's point total.
Juma Otoviano and junior college transfer Dean Connors were tasked with the bulk of the work at running back after Ari Broussard and Cameron Montgomery were held out of action. Otoviano rushed for 42 yards on 15 carries while Connors wrapped up his first spring at Rice with 55 yards on 10 carries.
McCaffrey led the receivers with seven receptions for 97 yards, followed by Connors (34 yards) and Peyton Stevenson (42 yards) with three each.
Senior Kenneth Orji was credited with a sack and also picked off a pass in the end zone to lead the defense.
