Red-Hot Owls Frisco Bound for C-USA Championship
The Rice Owls women's basketball team closed the 2021-22 regular season by winning six of their final seven contests and now head to Frisco for the C-USA Championship tournament. Rice moved up to fourth place in the West Division on the final day of the regular season to setup a showdown against the Marshall Thundering Herd at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Rice lost to the Herd by a score of 66-53 back on Jan. 15 at Tudor Fieldhouse. Should the Owls advance, they would then face the East champion Charlotte in a rematch of their quadruple overtime thriller in which the 49ers prevailed 88-83 back on Jan. 22.
Trio of Owls Earn All-Conference Honors
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin, sophomore guard Destiny Jackson, and freshman forward Malia Fisher were all recognized by C-USA by winning postseason awards on Monday. Austin was named All-Conference Second Team in a season in which she is averaging career-highs across the board, including 16.5 points per game. Jackson earned All-Conference Honorable Mention in her first full season as the team's starting point guard, leading the league in assists per game (4.7 apg). Fisher earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team and also collected All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades after proving to be one of the best players in the league as just a freshman, averaging 10.6 points and 8.4 rebounds for the season.
Turning Their Season Around
After starting the C-USA season 0-5 against the heavyweights of the East Division (combined record of 62-28) the Owls have since gone 8-4 and are playing their best basketball of the season entering March. During this stretch the Owls have defeated their opponents by an average margin of victory of 10.8 points.
Last Time Out
The Owls closed out the regular season with an emphatic 86-48 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners last Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse, the team's largest margin of victory this season. On a day where the Owls honored their lone senior Arianna McCurry in a pregame ceremony, it was the freshman Bokunewicz who stole the show. The State College, Pa. native set a season-high with 26 points, tying the Rice single-game school record with seven made three-pointers on 12 attempts while also securing 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Youth is Served
The Owls pose a starting lineup that consists of three true freshmen (Malia Fisher, Maya Bokunewicz, Trinity Gooden) joined by second-year sophomore's Ashlee Austin and Destiny Jackson. The team's current eight-player rotation started a combined three games (Swayze-2; Jackson-1) prior to Coach Edmonds' first season at the helm of the Owls.
Winning the Close Ones
The Owls improved to 5-2 this season in a games decided by six points or less with their thrilling 51-46 comeback victory at Southern Miss on Feb. 26. After dropping their first two games of the season in such situations, the Owls have now won five consecutive games.
Guarding the Arc
Rice ranks ninth in the NCAA in three-point field goal defense, allowing opponents to shoot at just a .252 clip from three-point territory. The Owls have held their opponents to below 30 percent shooting from deep in 18 of their 25 contests.
