HOUSTON — Following a record-setting season, graduate student Carl Pierre has been selected to participate in the 33rd annual TaxAct Men's College 3-Point Championship.
The event will be held this Thursday, March 31 on the campus of Xavier (La.) University in New Orleans, and will be televised on ESPN at 8 p.m. CT.
He becomes the first Rice player to participate in the event and just the second player from Conference USA, joining East Carolina's Akeem Richmond in 2014.
Pierre set the Rice single-season record with 97 three-pointers and tied the single-game mark for three-pointers with eight at Marshall. He led the league in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 40.4% from beyond the arc, and was second with 2.9 three-pointers made per game.
Pierre averaged a team-leading 15.4 points per game, good for seventh-place in C-USA while pulling down 4.7 rebounds. He's was also sixth in the league in field goal percentage, connecting on 46.9% from the field.
The Boston, Mass., native led the team in scoring a team-high 15 times and has recorded 26 double-figure scoring games. He led the Owls with eight 20-point games, including twice scoring a career-high 30 points at Marshall and UTEP. He earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors after helping the Owls to a series sweep of Middle Tennessee and UAB.
Twenty-four of the nation's elite men's and women's college basketball players will compete for slam dunk and three-point shooting bragging rights. The night features the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship, the TaxAct Men's 3-Point Championship, the Rocket Mortgage Women's 3-Point Shooting Championship and the Applebee's Team Shootout. The winners of the TaxAct Men's and Rocket Mortgage Women's 3-Point Championships will then compete in the Battle of the Champions.
