Bowtell moves into the top 10 for career wins
In Brief: Rice overcame early breaks in doubles to take and early lead and then carried the momentum into singles on its way to a 7-0 win over Marquette on Friday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Doubles: After 30th ranked Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi raced to a 6-1 lead at the first line, the Owls found themselves down a break at the second and third lines. Both duos (Saara Orav and Allison Zipoli at the second line; Federica Trevisan and Victoria Smirnova at the third) responded to the early slip and broke back to regain the momentum with Orav and Zipoli clinching the point with a 6-3 win.
Singles: Rice raced out to take first sets on all six courts and Smirnova, Budin, Zipoli, and Bowtell maintained their momentum to register straight-set wins, with Zipoli providing the clinching point. Bowtell's win was her 87th career singles win, moving her into a tie for 10th on the Owls career wins list. She improved to 8-2 in dual action and needs two more wins to reach double figures in spring singles for the fifth consecutive year. Trevisan and Orav dropped their second sets but came back with strong efforts in the superset (10-6 & 10-2) to close out the sweep.
Up Next: GRBTC will host wall-to-wall tennis on Sunday as the women host Tulane on the front courts while the men's team faces No. 19 Middle Tennessee on the back courts at 11 a.m. The R Association is hosting a women's tennis alumni reception on Sunday as the Owls celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Owls first Sweet 16 appearance at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
