Rice Falls to North Texas in C-USA Quarterfinals

FRISCO, Texas — Rice was held to 38.3% from the field, falling to North Texas, 68-50, in the quarterfinals of the Heritage Landscape Supply Group Conference USA Tournament, Thursday night at the Ford Center at the Star.
The Story
The teams traded baskets to begin the game. North Texas went on an 8-2 run, but Carl Pierre hit a three-pointer to pull the Owls within 10-7 five minutes into the game. However, Rice made just one of its next 11 shots as the Mean Green went on a 23-6 run over the next 12 and half minutes. Max Fiedler ended the run with a layup, but UNT answered with one of their own before Riley Abercrombie closed the half with a jumper to send Rice into halftime trailing 35-17.
North Texas opened the second half on a 12-4 run to take its largest lead of the game, 47-21. A layup by Mylyjael Poteat followed by a Travis Evee three-pointer sent the Owls on a 12-3 run, pulling them within 50-32. But the Mean Green scored seven of the next nine points to extend their lead back to 23. The Owls would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Rice was held to 38.3% (18-of-47) from the field and 16.7% (2-of-12) from three. North Texas connected on 50.0% (27-of-54) from the floor but just 29.2% (7-of-24) from three. Rice also connected on 80.0% (12-of-15) from the free throw line but was outrebounded, 38-to-26.
