Owls Return Home to Close Out Regular Season
With momentum on their side, the Rice Owls women's basketball team returns home to Tudor Fieldhouse this weekend for the final two games of the regular season, starting Thursday evening against UTEP. The Owls have won four of their last five contests and have moved into fifth place in the C-USA West Division, a half game up on the Miners. A win by Rice against UTEP would clinch the Owls not having to play the first round of next week's Conference USA Championship tournament. Rice defeated UTEP earlier this season back on Feb. 5, 72-69. Rice will conclude the regular season on Saturday on Senior Day against UTSA at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
Just 38 hours after suffering a heartbreaking double overtime loss at Louisiana Tech, the Owls dug deep to rally from a seven-point fourth quarter deficit and defeat Southern Miss 51-46 on the road last Saturday. The Owls capped off a seven-day road trip that ventured 1,758 miles to record one of their more memorable wins of the season to date, outscoring Southern Miss by a margin of 17-5 over the final 6:20 of the game. Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin continued her late tear by recording her first career double-double for the Owls with a game-high 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in 39 minutes of action.
Winning the Close Ones
The Owls improved to 5-2 this season in a games decided by six points or less with their 51-46 victory at Southern Miss. After dropping their first two games of the season in such situations, the Owls have now won five consecutive games.
Turning the Season Around
After starting the C-USA season 0-5 against the heavyweights of the East Division (combined record of 57-23) the Owls have since gone 6-4 and playing their best basketball of the season.
