Owls Begin Home & Home with Mean Green
Rice (7-9, 2-6) is set to play North Texas (10-10, 4-6) twice this week, starting Thursday in Denton when the Owls will conclude their current three-game road trip. Rice is 2-4 on the road this season while the Mean Green hold a 6-4 record at the Super Pit. North Texas will then travel to Houston on Feb. 13 for a Super Bowl Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. The Owls have dominated the all-time series with a 14-5 advantage, although North Texas did defeat Rice in last season's regular season finale, 75-66 to snap the Owls' 20-game home winning streak.
Scouting North Texas
The Mean Green is coming off of a 67-54 victory at UAB on Monday to even their overall record at 10-10. North Texas ranks second in C-USA in scoring, averaging 69.1 points per game. Junior guard Quincy Noble leads the team in scoring at 15.1 points per contest.
Last Time Out
The Owls secured their first Conference USA road victory of the season last Saturday afternoon, defeating the UTEP Miners 72-69 in a seesaw battle that went down to the final seconds. Rice received a season and career-high 20 points from freshman forward Malia Fisher, who made 7-of-14 shots from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Fisher was one of four Owls who scored in double figures, along with redshirt freshman Maya Bokunewicz (15 points), sophomore Destiny Jackson (14 points), and sophomore Ashlee Austin (13 points).
Fisher Freshman of the Week
Rice forward Malia Fisher secured her second C-USA Freshman of the Week award of the season, the league office announced on Monday (2/7). The Dacula, Ga. native scored a season-high 20 points on 50 percent (7-of-14) shooting from the field and a 6-of-6 performance at the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds, a season-high tying five assists and two steals all while playing the entire 40 minutes of Rice's 72-69 win over the Miners. Fisher is averaging 9.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals in 32 minutes per game in her first season as an Owl and has now scored in double-figures in five consecutive games and six of her last seven. She became the fourth player in program history to win multiple C-USA Freshman of the Week honors in a season.
