Texas Clinches Series with Saturday Win
2/19/2022 9:11:00 PM | Baseball
Series concludes at 1 pm Sunday.
The Details: After two scoreless frames to open the game, Texas jumped on top with three runs in the third, thanks to an error and a balk. The Longhorns added a single run in the fourth and then broke the game open by scoring six runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs. They added three runs in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to run up their largest run total against the Owls since they defeated Rice 24-5 on April 13, 1987. Three true freshmen snapped Texas' bid for a shutout in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Smigelski led off the inning with a single in his collegiate debut and Jack Ben-Shoshan followed with a double in the first at-bat of his career. Catcher Manny Garza drove home Smigelski from third with a sacrifice fly for his first career RBI.
Notable:
- Rice fell to 0-2 on the season.
- The win was the seventh straight for Texas over Rice. Rice's last win came on 2/19/17 when the Owls used a 7-1 win to split the four-game series.
- The Owls avoided being shut out by Texas in consecutive games for the first time since the Longhorns blanked the Owls in three consecutive games in 1980 (a single game at Cameron Field on February 29 and a doubleheader in Austin on March 31).
- Guy Garibay doubled in four trips to the plate and has a pair of doubles in the first two games of the season.
- Austin Bullman walked and doubled in three plate appearances.
- Garza walked in his first collegiate at-bat and followed that appearance with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
- Jack Riedel picked up his first hit as an Owl with a single in the fifth inning.
- Garret Zaskoda worked 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the game, fanning a pair.
Up Next: The teams wrap up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Sophomore lefthander Thomas Burbank will make his collegiate debut against the team he signed with originally out of high school. While did not pitch for the Longhorns, he received his undergraduate degree before transferring to San Jac where earned NJCAA All-American, Region XIV South Pitcher of the Year, and a unanimous All-Regional selection after posting a 12-0 record last season.
