Slow Start Dooms Rice in Loss to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Rice got down early and couldn't recover as it fell to UAB, 92-68, Thursday night from Bartow Arena.
The Story
Rice started off slow, missing its first five shots of the game as UAB scored the first 10 points. The Owls got on the board when Terrance McBride hit a jumper from inside the three-point line. UAB scored six straight points before Rice made three-of-four free throws. Five straight by the Blazers pushed their lead to 24-7 with 10:46 to play. The teams traded baskets over the next six minutes before Carl Pierre hit a three-pointer and Max Fielder made a layup to pull the Owls within 34-23 with 2:39 remaining in the half. But UAB scored five of the last seven points to head into halftime with a 39-25 lead.
The teams opened the second half trading baskets. UAB then went on a 10-2 run to take a 54-31 lead. After Max Fiedler made one-of-two free throws K.J. Buffen made a dunk, but Cameron Sheffield answered with a three. UAB scored two straight baskets and Mylyjael Poteat converted a three-point play as the Owls trailed, 60-38, with 13:36 to play. But Rice could not chip away at the deficit as the Blazers extended their lead to as many as 30

Rice connected on 46.3% (25-of-54) from the field and 39.1% from three (8-of-23). UAB shot 58.8% (40-of-68) from the floor and 40.0% (8-of-20) from three. Rice was also outrebounded by the Blazers, 35-to-25.

• Rice dropped to 14-11 on the season and 6-7 in Conference USA.
• Rice shot 59.3% in the second half.
• Sophomore Travis Evee scored 12 points and had three rebounds.
• Second-year sophomore Mylyjael Poteat scored 12 points.
