Home Is The Place To Be
Rice continues its six-game homestand on Friday, Dec. 16, when the Owls welcome Sam Houston to Tudor Fieldhouse at 11:15 a.m. The homestand will continue with the C-USA opener against Middle Tennessee on Dec. 20. The home stretch wraps up with Western Kentucky and UTEP on Dec. 29 and Dec. 31.
A Historic Start
Rice's 8-0 start to the season marks the best start in program history. Last time out, Rice rallied from down 12 in the second half to defeat Houston 91-88 in double overtime. Destiny Jackson shot a blistering 12-of-14 in the game with a career-high 33 points. Ashlee Austin added another 21 points for the Owls. Prior to Houston, Rice picked up back-to-back wins against Power 5 programs with Rice taking down Texas A&M in College Station 66-58, and then defending the homecourt against TCU 68-58.

Destiny Jackson was named the C-USA Player of the Week after her career performance against Houston, scoring a career-high 33 points on 12-of-14 shooting while adding seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jackson has reached double-digit points in seven of the Owls' eight games this season.

For the second straight week, Rice has earned votes in the AP and USA Today/WBCA Coaches Polls. Rice last received votes in the AP Poll on Feb. 15, 2021 and hasn't been ranking the top 25 since holding the program-highest No. 21 ranking on March 18, 2019. Rice last received votes in the USA Today/WBCA polls on March 15, 2021 and hasn't held a ranking in the poll since No. 23 on March 18, 2019.

The Owls lead the all-time series 20-7, with Rice winning the past four meetings with the Bearkats. Last meeting, Rice defeated Sam Houston 74-64 in Huntsville on Dec. 16, 2021.

Rice has 13 games (10 opponents) on the schedule from the state of Texas, with seven of those being non-conference matchups. Rice currently sits at 6-0 against schools from The Lone Star State with seven matchups remaining (will play UTEP, UTSA and North Texas twice).
Austin Tabbed for Preseason Honors, Owls Picked Fourth
Senior forward Ashlee Austin was named to the Conference USA Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team while league coaches picked the Owls to finish fourth in the conference race. Austin earned second-team, all-conference honors as a junior after a season in which she was the only player in C-USA to rank in the top 13 in points per game, field goal percentage, free throws made, and free throw percentage. She ranked fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (46.3) and fifth in scoring with 16.5 points per game as well as free throws made (122). She established career bests in nearly every statistical category and scored in double figures in 22 of 27 games, highlighted by a pair of 30-point efforts (Sam Houston & Charlotte).
