Dowd finishes 46th to lead squad
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Rice men's cross country team rode its most complete performance of the year to finish eighth out of 27 schools at the 2022 NCAA South Central Regional meet in College Station on Friday.
The Owls came into the competition ranked 14th in the most recent USTFCCCA regional poll, but combined to move solidly into the top ten.
"We had a good day, and it was close to being a really good day," said head coach Jon Warren. "This group ran smart and hard the whole way. A top-10inish was hoped for; eighth is great, and we were close to doing even better. The main key was a spread from 1-5 of just over a minute. This was our best team performance this season. To be a top team in this big region is an impressive accomplishment."
Juniors Travis Dowd (46th – 32:15.3) and Daniel Cohen (49th - 32:24.1) led the way for the Owls, while freshman Jackson Moran (32:37.5) finished 55th. Rounding out the scoring for Rice were sophomores Elliot Metcalf (64th- 32:55.0) and Davis Thames (74th – 33:18.3) as all of the Owls' five scores finished in the top 75.
The Owls will turn their attention to the completion of the fall semester and then return to competition on January 20 when the indoor track season opens with the Robert Platt Invitational at the University of Houston.
