First quadruple overtime contest in program history
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Rice Owls women's basketball team dropped a quadruple overtime heartbreaker Saturday afternoon at Charlotte, falling 88-83 in the first 60-minute game in program history.
An already short-handed Rice (5-8, 0-5) team was forced to play with eight active players and five of them registered 40+ minutes against the C-USA preseason favorite 49ers (8-6, 4-0).
Rice sophomore forward Ashlee Austin carried the scoring load for the Owls, matching her season and career-high with 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 9-of-12 at the charity stripe.
Junior guard Haylee Swayze added 19 points while logging a career-high 59 minutes while freshman forward Malia Fisher scored a season-high 15 rebounds and grabbed 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, all while playing all 60 minutes. Fisher also collected three assists, three steals and a block.
Sophomore guard Destiny Jackson was one of four Owls to score in double-figures, tallying 13 points in 41 minutes and snatched a career-high five steals before fouling out at 42 minutes of play. Redshirt freshman Maya Bokunewicz gave the Owls 58 minutes and was second on the team with seven rebounds.
Charlotte was led in scoring by Octavia Jett-Wilson as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year totaled a game-high 36 points and hit a pair of game-tying buzzer beaters in the overtimes to keep the game going.
The four overtime game marked just the fifth time Rice had reached triple overtime and the first occurrence since defeating North Texas (100-97) on Jan. 10, 2016. This was the second four overtime game in NCAA Division I this season with Denver defeating Butler (100-94) in quadruple overtime back on Dec. 10, 2021.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"I'm so unbelievably proud of my team. I know we didn't get the win but they showed ultimate heart and toughness for 60 minutes against a very good and veteran team. They did everything we asked of them and we definitely had shots to win it. There is so much we can take away from this game and while I really wanted this win for the players, we have nothing to hang our heads about. We're looking forward to getting home and getting ready for next week's games."
