Owls Looking to Get Back in Win Column
The Rice Owls women's basketball team will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid this weekend when they travel to Old Dominion (Thursday-2 p.m.) and Charlotte (Saturday-1 p.m.) for a pair of C-USA showdowns against teams that finished second and first, respectively, in the league's preseason poll. The Owls are in search of their first league win of the season while Old Dominion (12-3) has won 10 of their last 11 contests and Charlotte has started 2-0 in league play.
Scouting Old Dominion
The Monarchs split a pair of C-USA games last weekend, falling 53-48 at UTEP before returning home to defeat Florida Atlantic, 61-48. ODU wins with defense, ranking sixth in the country in scoring defense (50.3 ppg). The Monarchs are also eighth in the NCAA in turnover margin (+7.4), 11th in turnovers forced (23.2), and 12th in steals per game (12.4). Offensively ODU is led by Ajah Wayne (14.5 ppg) and transfer Iggy Allen (14.2 ppg). Rice defeated ODU in last season's C-USA semifinals and the two teams have split the first 16 meetings overall, 8-8.
Scouting Charlotte
Picked to win C-USA in the preseason poll, Charlotte has started 2-0 in league action after picking up road victories at UTEP (71-59) and UTSA (58-33). Octavia Jett-Wilson (17.8 ppg) and Mikayla Boykin (12.7 ppg) each average double-figures in scoring while Jada McMillian leads the league in assists per game (4.8 apg).
Last Time Out
The Owls were unable to overcome a fourth quarter surge by the Marshall Thundering Herd in a 66-53 loss last Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice was outscored 21-3 in the fourth quarter, erasing a five point advantage entering the final period. The Owls were led in scoring by sophomore guard Destiny Jackson, who totaled 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high nine rebounds and three assists while fighting foul trouble.
Bokunewicz, Bang!
Redshirt freshman guard Maya Bokunewicz now ranks second in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (37.3) and is fourth in three-point field goals made per game (2.0). The State College, Pa. native has made at least two or more three-pointers in eight of the 11 games she's appeared in.
Jackson Finding Her Groove
Sophomore starting point guard Destiny Jackson is averaging 8.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 27.6 minutes per contest while shooting 47 percent from the field in her third season with the Owls. The Mansfield, Texas native is averaging nearly 10 points along with 8 rebounds in three C-USA games while shooting 57 percent from the field.
