Thundering Herd outscore Rice 21-3 in fourth quarter
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team was unable to overcome a fourth quarter surge by the Marshall Thundering Herd in a 66-53 loss Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (5-6, 0-3) was outscored 21-3 in the fourth quarter, erasing a five point advantage entering the final period. The Owls were led in scoring by sophomore guard Destiny Jackson, who totaled 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high nine rebounds and three assists while fighting foul trouble.
The Owls outshot the Herd from the field, 44%-41%, but Marshall held an advantage in points off turnovers (32-11), points in the paint (36-24) and fast break points (17-5).
Marshall (9-5, 4-1) had three players score in double-figures led by 17 points from guard Aaliyah Dunham. Forward Kennedi Colclough added 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting while the team's leading scorer Savannah Wheeler (20.5 ppg) was held to 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting.
Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"Today kind of felt a little déjà vu, getting off to a great start and then having some lulls that allow teams to get back in it and get the momentum swung in their direction. I don't know if it's fatigue, but we're just not finishing out fourth quarters the way I would like us to be. Today was a struggle with foul trouble so we've got to figure out a way to defend without fouling so we can keep our players on the floor. We just haven't yet put together a 40-minute game and I think when we do that the outcomes can be different."
