HOUSTON — Year five of the Scott Pera era began this morning as Rice held its first official basketball practice of the 2021-22 season.
Pera returns his most experienced team yet, as the Owls bring back 10 letterwinners from last year's team that went 15-13, including all five starters. Rice welcomes back Third Team All-Conference USA member Quincy Olivari, who led the league with 88 three-pointers, and league Newcomer of the Year Travis Evee. Max Fiedler, who averaged double-figures while leading the team in rebounds and assists, also returns.
"It's great to have older guys," said Pera. "We've really built this to get to his point. To look in the huddle this year and see all the juniors and seniors who have a lot of experience while adding guys that have experience, like Terrance (McBride) and Carl (Pierre). It's only going to help us. It will help us through adversity, through tough times against tough opponents. Experience matters."
Rice begins the 2021-22 campaign on Nov. 4 when it hosts St. Edward's in an exhibition game. The regular season begins on Nov. 9 when the Owls host College Basketball Invitational champion Pepperdine.
