Forbes wins individual title
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's cross country placed second overall as a team in their season-opening Rice Invitational Friday evening, placing four of their five scoring runners in the top-20.
Sophomore All-American Grace Forbes picked up where she left off in the spring by winning her second career cross country race and doing so in her home debut. The Wallingford, Pa. native won by nearly 34 full seconds and ran the 4000m race at a pace of 3:20/k. Fellow sophomore teammate Caitlin Wosika turned in her best individual performance as an Owl by placing fourth overall in a time of 14:09.70 while senior Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (9th-14:15.60) also placed in the top-10.
Senior Madeline Forbes (17th-14:35.50) and freshman Haley Allen (19th-14:38.20) delivered top-20 finishes for the Owls.
"I'm pleased with what for us was a rust buster," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "Grace was fantastic in her first home meet. I'm very proud of how Caitlin (Wosika) performed considering it was her first race in two years and she has definitely improved. This was also the first race for Lourdes (Vivas de Lorenzi) in two years and I thought she handled it well. This was definitely the best races from Maddie (Forbes) and Haley (Allen) too. I like the way we performed tonight and I think we have a chance to be really in October.
The Owls will now have a couple weeks to prepare for the Texas A&M Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25 in College Station.
