9.11.2001
Rice and Houston will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks on the United States on Saturday with a salute to the nation's military but also recognize the members of the 2001 Rice football team, who were the first college football team to fly after the attacks. The 2001 Owls opened the season with a 21-14 win at Houston (becoming the second Rice team to repeat as Bayou Bucket champions) and were slated to play at Nebraska that week. Since both teams were open the following weekend, the game was rescheduled for Thursday, September 20th to kick off the return of college football. Rice went on to finish 8-4, the most wins for the Owls since 1953, but did not receive a bowl bid as the WAC only had two bowl affiliations at that time.
Defensive Streaks
Trevor Cobb became the fourth player to compete for the Bayou Bucket to enter the College Football Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 2018, joining Tommy Kramer of Rice and Wilson Whitley and Andre Ware of Houston.

Defensive Streaks

- Rice has stopped opponents on their last eight fourth down conversion attempts dating back to the final game of the 2019 season. The Owls denied UTEP's final offensive attempt in 2019, held the opposition to an 0/6 mark in 2020 and stopped Arkansas on its only fourth down attempt on Saturday.
Trevor Cobb became the fourth player to compete for the Bayou Bucket to enter the College Football Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 2018, joining Tommy Kramer of Rice and Wilson Whitley and Andre Ware of Houston.
