
Victor Lopez Elected to Texas Track & Field HOF

WYLIE, Texas – Former Rice head coach Victor Lopez has been elected to the Texas Track and Field Hall of Fame Class for 2022, the organization announced on Sunday (8/1).
Lopez is regarded as one of the most respected teachers in the sports of cross country and track & field. He started the Rice University women's cross country and track & field program and is a USTFCCCA Hall of Famer, as well as member of the Rice Hall of Fame.
He began his career with the Owls in 1980 and led Rice to five Top-10 NCAA finishes as head coach. Furthermore, Lopez's athletes at Rice garnered over 150 All-American honors and collected 17 individual national championship titles.
Lopez led the Owls to 10 conference titles, which included three cross country championships. Under his guidance the Owls won three consecutive WAC indoor titles from 2000-02 and won consecutive WAC outdoor titles in 2000-01 and 2003-04.
Lopez retired from Rice at the conclusion of the 2005 season and each year the Owls honor him by hosting the Victor Lopez Classic.
The Texas Track & Field Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which will also honor the 2021 class, will take place the evening of January 7, 2022 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine at 7 p.m. For more information about the Texas Track & Field Hall of Fame: https://www.ttfca.org/hall-of-famers
